Final Project

The objective is to enable you to develop a study design independently through this project exercise. Consider that you are the Principal Investigator of a (hypothetical) study, and you have already specified the study objectives and hypotheses. After securing funding for the study, you have decided to conduct a survey to collect data. It is expected that you will develop the study design with an appropriate sampling strategy for conducting the survey.

» Problem Statement

The World Health Organization defines domestic violence as: "...the range of sexually, psychologically and physically coercive acts used against adult and adolescent women by current or former male intimate partners." Physical abuse by an intimate partner is the most common form of violence women experience. It is estimated that between 10% to 52% of women experience some form of violence at the hands of their husband or male partner. Violence is a major cause of death for pregnant and postpartum women in the United States . The reporting of women experiencing domestic violence at the hand of their husband or intimate partner during pregnancy is as high as 20%. A study in Uttar Pradesh, India found that the odds of neonatal mortality rate (deaths by 28 days of life) is two times higher among mothers who experienced domestic violence than the mothers who did not experience violence.

Based on the above information, and additional information if required, you have decided to conduct a survey at population level to examine the effect of domestic violence during pregnancy on adverse birth outcomes (neonatal mortality) in a developing country where domestic violence is likely to be high. You may choose any country (could be hypothetical) of your own interest. Consider that the proposed study is an attempt to response to the Plan of Action by World Health Organization (WHO) for "a science-based public health approach to violence prevention and health."

Describe the study design, sample size and power, sampling plan, and survey implementation strategies. It is expected that you will describe your target population, and provide description of the steps that will be employed to select your samples. Provide justifications for the specified design of your study. If additional information is required to design the study, provide the sources or justifications.
